Tools

Several of the notes on this site end in a worked calculation. A tool is that calculation with its inputs exposed, so a reader can put their own figures in rather than reading ours.

What a tool is, and what it is not

It is arithmetic
Each tool applies one provision to the figures entered. It states the assumptions it makes and cites the section, rule or regulation it applies, on the same screen as the result.
It is tied to a note
A tool is published only alongside the note that explains the provision. The note is the reasoning; the tool is the sum.
It stores nothing
Figures entered stay in the browser. Nothing is transmitted, nothing is recorded, and no result is emailed. No tool asks who the reader is.
It is not advice
A tool takes no account of the facts of any particular matter. A figure it returns is information, not advice, and a reader with a legal issue must seek independent advice on their own facts.
